First Impressions on Discipleship: A Character Curriculum Using Scripture

B brought home my first "book" today!

The intro states that it can either be used as a teaching method in the heat of the moment to correct negative behavior or as an actual curriculum (it breaks it up into one year for older kids, two year for middle school kids, and three three year for younger kids complete with a lesson plan for each).

I'll decide if I want to add it as an official curriculum once I check out all of my other stuff, but I will be using it to teach in difficult situations. This is what the author recommends:

Depending upon the situation, identify the issue that needs dealing with (love and peace for fighting, truth for lying, etc.) Each topic comes with a Scripture and a definition. Read both and discuss.
I'm gonna write out the Scriptures and definitions on index cards and keep them in the binder pockets for easy access for little hands.
There are also copywork for older kids to practice writing the Scriptures either during correction or during lesson plans.

There are also spots for prayer, journaling, and reading to keep track of everything.

I definitely think it's something that will grow with us through the years. I'll likely start out using the Scripture and definition cards to address behaviors and the copywork to teach them the verses and also to keep little hands occupied while calming down. I'll probably start using it as a curriculum when all of the kids are reading and continue it year after year from the three year program, to the two year, and culminating in the one year program for high school years.

I think the idea of true discipleship is lost nowadays and parents are either too quick to get a switch or to give in to whatever is going on. I'm all about correction, but I think that dealing with the root issue and giving advice and wisdom to make better choices is even more important than just spanking or placating without another word said. That's just my opinion, though. And I think this will help give me Word to back up what I tell the kids in addressing negative behaviors.

I can't wait to put it to work - which will probably be later today. ;)

  1. Sounds great! I love the format.

I may look into it next year if what I planned for this year doesn't work! Keep me updated on how it is working!!!
