But, I decided that I'm going to make Tony a car mat for his Hot Wheels. The boy loves cars, just like my husband. These are made on felt squares that can be taken apart for use on the road (or church, the doctor, wherever he may need to focus his attention to keep quiet and still) or placed all together for a large map. I think he'll like it.
For Auds, I'm going to make some tutus and dress up outfits. The girl loves dressing up and changing outfits. I've created her a dress up station in the playroom and will make stuff for Buddy as well - policeman vests, etc. I think it'll be a lot of fun.
I was just overwhelmed with the amount of consumerism there is. We went to get a gift for a friend's party and Auds had a meltdown in the toy aisle over every little thing. Creative marketing at it's best. Put it in a shiny package within arm's reach of preschooler so that said preschooler will grab and hug and fall in love with. Preschooler will then throw a fit in the middle of the store "forcing" parents to purchase item - that will likely soon be forgotten about. Of course, I'm that bad parent who said "no" and held her through the store as we quickly checked out and made our exit.
For Christmas gifts for friends this year I'm making chocolate dipped pretzels in personalized mugs. For the neighbors, they're getting candy. Reindeer noses, to be exact. We have 15 neighbors in our little cul-de-sac, so I wanted to do something thrifty. Last year I made cocoa mixes.
What are you doing for Christmas this year?
The reindeer noses are so adorable!! I love that.
ReplyDeleteI did a car mat for David's second birthday. Yours is so much cuter. I love the idea of making it in panels for easier travel. That was one of the downsides of my mat - it was too big to take anywhere.
This year I'm making candy cane bath salts, lip balm and lotion bars for all of the women in my family. The men will get some sort of baked goods. I also did a genealogy project for extended family and bound all of the research together into a book.
I made a boppy pillow and baby carrier for Gracie to use with her baby. I'm hoping to make a mini indoor cornhole set for the boys (this is a good way to use up my scraps of fabric), but I broke my sewing machine last week and it depends on if I get it fixed in time. I'm also making a cross-stitched bib for my sitter's baby.
That's about it for the homemade stuff this year. I bought the rest of the kids' gifts at Goodwill - a bunch of books and VHS tapes. I found some preemie baby clothes for Gracie's baby doll. That's the extent of their Christmas. We may get them one small store-bought gift from Santa (even though you know how I feel about that).
I can't stand the consumerism. You couldn't pay me to set foot in the mall or toy store right now. Thank goodness for online shopping, because having to shop in a store would ruin the holiday mood for me right now!
What on earth is a cornhole, Jess?
ReplyDeleteHahahahahaha.
ReplyDeleteIt's an (usually) outdoor game with beanbags. The beanbags are filled with corn and you toss them into these targets that are holes.

It's really fun. We play it a lot in the summer at barbeques, kind of like horseshoes or hillbilly golf.
But I saw the cutest indoor set for little kids and it looked super easy to make. I figured it would be a great indoor activity for my boys during the winter months, but I'm not sure tossing beanbags around the house with little babies is a good idea. We'll see!
